The Gan International Airport development project has reached a significant milestone, with 60 percent of the work now completed, according to the latest update from authorities.
The ambitious project, which aims to transform Gan Airport into a modern aviation hub in the southern region of the Maldives, includes the expansion of the runway, construction of a new passenger terminal, and enhanced cargo and aviation facilities. Once completed, the airport will have the capacity to handle wide-body aircraft and a significant increase in passenger traffic, opening new opportunities for tourism and trade.
Officials stated that the current progress includes the completion of major structural components of the terminal building and ongoing works on the runway extension. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing the project on schedule, citing its importance in driving regional development, improving connectivity, and creating new economic opportunities for the people of Addu City and nearby atolls.

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen, said the project represents a key element of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to ensure balanced development across the nation and empower southern atolls with infrastructure that supports tourism, logistics, and business.
The Gan International Airport development is being carried out with financial and technical assistance from international partners, and is expected to be fully completed by mid-2026.
The project is seen as a vital step toward decentralization and economic diversification, supporting the Maldives’ long-term goal of becoming a regional transport and tourism hub.
