By President Mohammed Muizzu has reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic ties with nations that support the Maldives’ development while ensuring the independence and sovereignty of the country remain paramount.
During his official visit to India, President Muizzu met with the Maldivian community in Bangalore, where he highlighted the importance of balanced foreign relations. He emphasized that while the Maldives will work closely with all countries that assist its progress, the nation’s independence will always come first.
“India has been a close partner of the Maldives for centuries, and our diplomatic relations are now celebrating 60 years,” President Muizzu said. “Over these decades, India has supported us in numerous fields, from economic development to healthcare. Whenever we needed assistance, India has always been among our top priorities, as they have been a steadfast neighbor.”
Reflecting on his successful visit to India, where several key agreements were signed, President Muizzu noted the long-standing partnership between the two nations and its significance for both economic and social development. He underscored the cooperation in areas such as healthcare, specialized training for doctors, and educational opportunities.
“Our relationship with India is grounded in mutual respect and the well-being of our people. We will continue to enhance these ties in ways that benefit both nations,” President Muizzu added. “However, our foreign policy will always prioritize the interests of our people and our country’s independence.”
The President assured the Maldivian people that while international partnerships are essential for progress, the sovereignty of the Maldives will never be compromised. “I want to reassure all Maldivians that my foreign policy will remain steadfast in protecting the independence and sovereignty of our nation,” he stated.
The visit to India marks another step in strengthening Maldives’ foreign relations, with President Muizzu committed to ensuring that these relationships are built on respect for the country’s autonomy.
