Maldives President Announces Major Regional Development Plan

Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has unveiled an ambitious 20-year master plan for regional development across the archipelago. In a detailed statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the President outlined plans to establish three major development zones aimed at decentralizing services and promoting sustainable regional growth.

The plan includes the creation of two Integrated Development Zones: a Northern Integrated Development Zone encompassing three atolls in the uppermost region, and a Southern Integrated Development Zone covering four atolls in the southernmost region. Additionally, the plan proposes seven new urban centers, with three to be developed north of Male and four to the south.

According to President Muizzu, this initiative was clearly outlined in his manifesto (Chapter 4, items 12, 13, and 14) and has been consistently communicated through various public forums. The development strategy aims to provide high-level services beyond the Male Urban Region, ensuring more balanced national development.

The President emphasized that the master plan will be developed through extensive consultation with stakeholders, including residents, technical experts, council members, and other relevant parties from all islands of the Maldives. He also addressed political criticism, stating that those making politically motivated claims without understanding or despite knowing the facts would be held responsible for their statements.

This comprehensive development strategy represents a significant shift in the Maldives’ approach to urban planning and regional development, aiming to create more equitable access to services across the island nation over the next two decades.
