Male’ City, Maldives – The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has initiated a groundbreaking study to harness ocean wave energy, aligning with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to transition 33% of the Maldives’ energy to renewable sources by 2028.
STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy announced the initiative on X, stating that the study will gather critical data required to develop wave energy systems. “This project is part of President Dr. Muizzu’s commitment to reduce the nation’s dependence on oil and establish a more efficient and reliable energy grid,” Fahmy said.

Wave energy offers immense potential for the Maldives, a nation surrounded by vast ocean resources. Fahmy emphasized that the study represents a key step toward fulfilling the administration’s promise to make renewable energy a cornerstone of the Maldives’ power generation strategy.

The transition to renewable energy sources, such as wave energy, is expected to not only reduce reliance on imported oil but also contribute to global efforts in combating climate change.
