Male’ City, Maldives – The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has completed the restoration of the iconic fishpond near the minaret of the Islamic Center and officially handed it over to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. The handover ceremony took place today, marking a significant contribution by STELCO to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Islamic Center’s opening.
The fishpond, originally constructed when the mosque was inaugurated on November 11, 1984, had fallen into disrepair over the years. To celebrate the milestone, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs recently announced plans to restore the pond, and STELCO stepped forward to undertake the project as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

The restored fishpond was handed over in a ceremony attended by STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy, company employees, Islamic Minister Dr. Shaheem Ali Saeed, and other officials from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.
The pond, once neglected and polluted, has been thoroughly cleaned, repainted, and restocked with fish, transforming it into a vibrant and serene feature of the Islamic Center’s premises.
A Tribute to Heritage
Speaking at the event, Managing Director Fahmy emphasized STELCO’s commitment to preserving cultural and religious landmarks. “We are proud to contribute to the restoration of this symbolic feature of the Islamic Center.
