The People’s National Congress (PNC) has successfully concluded its largest internal election to date, with voting closing at 2:00 PM today. The election saw members casting their votes across 90 islands in Malé and the atolls, with a total of 143 ballot boxes in place, including 53 in Malé.
Voting took place at Dharubaaruge in Malé and Rehendhi School in Hulhumalé, with 34,904 eligible members participating in the democratic process. The election featured 667 candidates competing for 1,984 positions, while 130 positions were filled uncontested.
PNC Chairperson and People’s Majlis Speaker Abdul Raheem hailed the event as a historic milestone for the party, attributing the surge in PNC membership, now nearing 100,000, to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s policies. This marks a significant step in strengthening the party’s internal structure and grassroots presence.
The election, initially scheduled for October 19, was postponed to accommodate the Republic Day public holiday. With the conclusion of voting, the PNC is expected to announce results soon, setting the stage for a renewed leadership to steer the party forward.
