The mandate of the newly merged Ministry of Tourism and Environment will be fully upheld, Minister Ibrahim Thorig assured today.
In his first interview after assuming office, Minister Thorig emphasized that experienced professionals in the field would ensure the ministry’s successful operation. “There is no doubt that the work will be carried out effectively with their expertise,” he said.
Addressing concerns regarding environmental responsibilities under the ministry, Minister Thorig stated that these functions would continue to be executed in accordance with established regulations. He added that after familiarizing himself with the full scope of the ministry’s tourism mandate, he would implement structured policies to govern its affairs.
“I have been in charge of the tourism ministry for about 48 hours. We are now identifying and studying the changes that need to be made. I believe this is possible,” he said.
Highlighting the interdependence of tourism and the environment, Minister Thorig noted that the natural beauty of the Maldives is the primary draw for visitors. “Tourism and the environment are deeply connected, and the ministry will work to fulfill both mandates to the fullest extent,” he assured.
Minister Thorig also expressed confidence in advancing sustainability efforts within the tourism industry. “It will be easier for us to support sustainability initiatives undertaken by resorts,” he said.
His remarks come as the government consolidates ministries to improve efficiency and streamline national policies. The merger of the Tourism and Environment Ministries is expected to align environmental conservation with the Maldives’ key economic sector, ensuring a balanced approach to development and sustainability.
