Maldives Leads the Way in Sustainability and Innovation in 2025

In 2025, the Maldives is making significant strides in sustainable development, economic diversification, and environmental conservation, positioning itself as a leader among small island nations.

Tourism and Infrastructure Expansion

Building on a record-breaking 2 million tourist arrivals in 2024, the Maldivian government aims to attract 2.3 million visitors by year-end. Efforts include expanding national airline routes to Europe and China, and promoting resort development in underutilized atolls like Haa Dhaalu and Thaa  . The $800 million expansion of Hanimaadhoo International Airport, featuring a new terminal and seaplane facilities, is set to boost connectivity and regional economic growth  .

Environmental Leadership

The Maldives has launched an Ecotourism Framework in collaboration with USAID, focusing on eco-certification, sustainable site development, and conservation education . Marine conservation efforts are also prominent, with manta ray tourism contributing $8.1 million annually and supporting citizen science initiatives .

Economic Diversification and Digital Innovation

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration is investing in digital infrastructure, aiming for the digital economy to comprise 15% of GDP by 2030 . The Maldives Creative Economy Strategic Action Plan (2024–2028) seeks to empower artists and entrepreneurs, fostering a vibrant creative sector .

Climate Resilience and Renewable Energy

With MVR 900 million allocated for climate action, the government is enhancing coastal defenses and expanding renewable energy projects to meet 33% of energy needs by 2028 .
