The Maldives welcomed a new era of tourism with the grand inauguration of the Velana International Airport’s new passenger terminal, celebrated with a mesmerizing drone show and vibrant fireworks display. The event, attended by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and 6,000 guests, illuminated Hulhulé Island, marking a pivotal moment for the nation’s tourism-driven economy.
Spanning 78,000 square meters, the state-of-the-art terminal can accommodate 7.5 million passengers annually, a fivefold increase from the current capacity. Featuring 38 immigration counters, 40 boarding gates, six aerobridges, and advanced self-service kiosks, it promises a seamless travel experience for the 2 million tourists visiting the Maldives yearly. The modern design and upgraded facilities aim to ease congestion and elevate the arrival experience, setting the stage for a projected tourism revenue of USD 6 billion by 2027.
The inauguration dazzled with a high-tech drone show at 21:20, followed by a spectacular fireworks display, broadcast live across Malé, Hulhumalé, and beyond. Cultural performances and local delicacies added a festive Maldivian flair, delighting attendees. “This terminal is a gateway to paradise, showcasing our commitment to world-class hospitality,” said Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, CEO of Maldives Airports Company Limited.

The terminal’s opening is set to boost tourism, which drives 25% of the nation’s GDP, by attracting new airlines and enhancing connectivity. With a 14% surge in arrivals this July, the Maldives is poised for growth, welcoming travelers to its pristine beaches and luxury resorts with unmatched efficiency. As operations begin with Maldivian Airlines and expand to international carriers by September, the new Velana terminal heralds a bright future, inviting the world to experience the Maldives’ magic like never before.
