Mamigili Council Establishes New Tourism Landmark with Shipwreck Installation

In a bid to further promote local tourism, the Mamigili Council has announced the establishment of a near-island sea attraction with the construction of a shipwreck, creating a unique experience for visitors and divers alike.

The initiative is part of a broader project aimed at developing a boatyard on the island. As stipulated in the project’s announcement, the winning bidder is also required to undertake Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. These include the launch of an iron boat, the construction of a jetty, and the development of an indoor hall to support community needs.

Speaking on the project, council representatives highlighted that the shipwreck not only enhances the island’s tourism appeal but also reflects Mamigili’s commitment to diversifying its attractions. Shipwrecks are widely regarded as valuable marine tourism assets, offering both ecological benefits and unique diving experiences.

Currently, Mamigili hosts seven guesthouses catering to local and international tourists, with additional facilities under construction. The council believes that the shipwreck, coupled with improved infrastructure and the planned community hall, will further strengthen Mamigili’s position as a growing hub for guesthouse tourism in the Maldives.

By integrating tourism development with community-focused projects, the Mamigili Council aims to balance economic growth with local empowerment, ensuring that both residents and visitors benefit from the island’s expanding opportunities.
