Malé, Maldives – August 30, 2025 – The Maldives is in mourning following the passing of Mohamed Umar Manik, affectionately known as MU Manik, a revered pioneer of the nation’s tourism industry. Manik’s visionary leadership and tireless efforts transformed the Maldives into a world-class luxury tourism destination, leaving an enduring legacy that continues to shape the nation’s economy and global reputation.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu expressed profound grief, stating, “I heard with deep sadness the news of the passing away of the Honorable Mulige Sharaf, one of the pillars of Maldives’ tourism. He has done commendable work in the development of tourism in Maldives. He has worked hard and played a major role in making Maldives a world-class tourist destination. May Allah bless the soul of the late Mohammed Umar Manik and grant him eternal blessings in Paradise! May God grant the family of the deceased patience! Amen.”
In the early 1970s, when the Maldives lacked essential infrastructure such as an airport or international flights, MU Manik, alongside partners like Hussain Afeef and Ahmed Naseem, recognized the untapped potential of the nation’s pristine beaches and vibrant marine ecosystems. In 1972, Manik co-founded Universal Enterprises and opened Kurumba Village, the Maldives’ first resort, welcoming its inaugural group of tourists on February 28, 1972. This bold initiative, undertaken despite a United Nations study deeming tourism unfeasible, laid the cornerstone for an industry that now contributes over 20% to the Maldives’ GDP.
Manik’s vision extended far beyond establishing resorts. He played a pivotal role in elevating the Maldives from a budget-friendly destination to a premier luxury hotspot. In 1987, he led the transformation of Kurumba Village into a world-class resort, setting a new benchmark for hospitality in the region. Under his stewardship, Universal Enterprises grew into one of the Maldives’ largest conglomerates, managing eight luxury resorts and forging partnerships with global hospitality brands such as Starwood and W-Hotels.
As Chairman of the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) for over 30 years, Manik was a steadfast advocate for sustainable tourism and the inclusion of local communities in the industry. His initiatives, such as the Universal Foundation and the Villa College Discover Hospitality program, empowered Maldivians to thrive in the hospitality sector, fostering economic growth. Manik also championed environmental sustainability, influencing policies like the 1970s ban on spearfishing to protect the Maldives’ marine biodiversity.
Manik’s contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the National Award of Recognition in 1982, the National Award of Honor in 2002, the Minivan 25 Public Service Award, and the President’s Tourism Golden Award in 2022. Beyond tourism, he held significant roles, such as Chairman of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) until January 2024 and a board member of the Maldives Monetary Authority. His philanthropic efforts further solidified his legacy as a leader dedicated to the betterment of Maldivian society.
MU Manik is survived by his family and a nation forever transformed by his pioneering spirit. His legacy endures in the thriving tourism industry and the countless lives he touched through his dedication and generosity.
