Maldives Tourism Hits New Heights: 1.5 Million Arrivals Mark Milestone Amid Record-Breaking Growth

Malé, Maldives – September 13, 2025 – The Maldives continues to solidify its position as a global luxury tourism powerhouse, with official figures revealing over 1.52 million international tourist arrivals year-to-date, a staggering 9.7% surge compared to the same period in 2024. This milestone, reported by the Ministry of Tourism as of September 7, underscores the nation’s relentless momentum toward a revised target of 2.3 million visitors by year’s end – eclipsing the historic 2 million mark achieved in 2024.  Industry experts attribute this boom to enhanced air connectivity, targeted marketing campaigns, and a surge in high-value travelers from key markets like China, Russia, and Western Europe.

In the first week of September alone, 33,733 tourists arrived, maintaining an average daily influx of 6,232 visitors and fueling projections for sustained economic growth.  The sector, which accounts for approximately 21% of the Maldives’ GDP, is expected to drive a robust 5.5% real GDP expansion for the year, bolstered by initiatives like the ambitious US$5 billion tourism revenue goal set by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).   Enhanced infrastructure, including new airline routes and frequent flights, has made the archipelago more accessible, while global marketing efforts – such as 23 international fairs, roadshows, and social media campaigns – have amplified its allure.

Spotlight on Sustainability and Innovation

Amid the influx, the Maldives is doubling down on sustainable practices to preserve its pristine environment. The nation recently clinched “Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination 2025” and “Indian Ocean’s Leading Green Destination 2025” at the World Travel Awards in June, highlighting its commitment to eco-friendly tourism.  This aligns with broader efforts, including the endorsement of the “Reconnecting Duo” sea turtle conservation initiative by Visit Maldives Corporation, aimed at protecting marine biodiversity essential for snorkeling and diving attractions.

Resorts are leading the charge with innovative programs. Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives has relaunched “Manta Month” this September, inviting guests to engage in manta ray conservation activities, building on last year’s success.  Meanwhile, Nova Maldives is promoting “Solo Traveller Month” with wellness retreats, yoga sessions, and mindful escapes, tapping into the rising demand for personalized, rejuvenating experiences.  Marriott International’s Luxury Wellbeing Series 2025, kicking off in August across Asia, features transformative retreats in the Maldives, further elevating its wellness tourism profile.

On the business front, the recently concluded Food & Hospitality Asia Maldives 2025 exhibition (September 7-9) showcased culinary and hospitality innovations, drawing global exhibitors and reinforcing the Maldives’ appeal for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events.  Joy Island Maldives unveiled the “Joy Connect Hall,” a state-of-the-art conference venue, while Fushifaru Maldives garnered multiple accolades for boutique luxury.  ROBINSON MALDIVES was honored as “Best Adults Only Resort 2025” at the Travel Trade Maldives Awards on September 5, celebrating its serene, adults-focused offerings on Funamadua Island.
