Malé, Maldives – October 3, 2025 – The Maldives today marked its annual National Tourism Day, commemorating the opening of the nation’s first resort, Kurumba Village, on October 3, 1972. The day’s events, which coincided with the global celebration of World Tourism Day on September 27th under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” underscored the Maldivian commitment to environmental stewardship and inclusive growth.
Celebrations spanned the archipelago, beginning with special cultural welcome ceremonies for tourists arriving at Velana International Airport and regional hubs. Government officials and industry leaders used the platform to reinforce the need for a resilient, eco-conscious tourism sector.
In a special statement, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu emphasized that the country’s status as a global leader in luxury travel must be paired with efforts to support broader social and environmental goals. He highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, such as the new international airport terminal, designed to support the long-term, sustainable expansion of the sector.
The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) hosted a gala event, where tributes were paid to the pioneers of Maldivian tourism. Industry stakeholders reiterated their dedication to the “one-island, one-resort” model and new initiatives focusing on carbon awareness, community-centered experiences, and reef restoration projects.
With tourist arrivals for the year having surpassed 1.5 million and the government targeting 2.3 million by year-end, the 2025 celebrations were a moment to reflect on the industry’s phenomenal growth and chart a course for a future where tourism is a genuine force for sustainable transformation. Local businesses and resorts participated in activities that promoted responsible consumption and cultural preservation, solidifying the message that sustainability remains the cornerstone of the Maldivian holiday experience.
