Velana International Airport’s Seaplane Terminal Relocates to Boost Expansion

The existing seaplane terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) will be relocated to the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort. This announcement was made by Economic Minister Mohammed Saeed during a press conference.

New Seaplane Terminal

Reason for Relocation

The primary purpose of the move is to create space for further airport development and streamline operations. The vacated seaplane terminal will be converted into a dedicated jet terminal, fulfilling a current gap in VIA’s infrastructure.

Details of the Move

  • The existing seaplane landing area will be dredged to expand the domestic terminal’s capacity.
  • The relocated seaplane terminal will operate from the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort.
  • Discussions are underway to finalize the relocation process with the resort’s management.

Context and Vision

This move aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s 20-year master plan for VIA, which aims to significantly enhance the airport’s capacity and service quality. The plan includes provisions for:

  • Increased passenger capacity (25 million annually)
  • Improved infrastructure (separate terminals for jets and domestic flights, expanded cargo terminal)
  • Enhanced facilities (maintenance, transit hotels, shopping centers)

This development reflects the Maldives’ commitment to substantial growth in the aviation sector, positioning itself as a key player in regional and international travel.
