By The Maldives has reaffirmed its status as a premier global tourism destination, clinching a remarkable 30 awards at the 2024 South Asian Travel Awards (SATA). The esteemed event was held on Friday, September 20th, 2024, at Aloft Kathmandu in Nepal, with the support of the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and the Hotels Association of Nepal (HAN).
The Maldives received 15 SATA Gold Awards, acknowledging its hospitality and tourism industry’s excellence. Additionally, the Maldives won the esteemed Visitors’ Choice Award for Leading Beach Destination, solidifying its status as a prime destination for travelers desiring perfect beach vacations. The Maldives has also been the recipient of this award in 2023, 2017, and 2016. Beyond the Gold Awards, the Maldives garnered 14 SATA Silver Awards, showcasing its prowess across multiple categories.
A SATA Conversation Panel Discussion titled “Regional Tourism in South Asia – Challenges & Connectivity” was a highlight of the event, featuring prominent industry leaders. Mr. Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO & MD of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/ Visit Maldives), represented the nation. He was joined by notable personalities like Mr. Sanjeev Kumar of Voyages Kerala, Mr. Taufiq Rahman of PATA Bangladesh Chapter, and Ms. Nandini Lahe-Thapa of Nepal Tourism Board. Ishan Koul from Naaz Hotel Consultants moderated the panel.
At the panel discussion, CEO & MD Shiuree highlighted the importance of regional tourism cooperation and the Maldives’ allure as a short-haul destination for South Asian travelers. He stated, “The Maldives presents a unique blend of unspoiled beaches, crystal-clear waters, and rich marine life. These natural treasures render us an attractive destination for tourists, particularly short-haul visitors from South Asian countries. I am convinced that our meaningful and value-added experiences significantly contribute to the advancement and strengthening of the regional tourism industry.
