The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 79), underscored the Maldives’ enduring commitment to advocating for justice and human rights on the global stage.
Speaking to international media, President Muizzu stated that the people of the Maldives stand in full solidarity with the Palestinian people, emphasizing that “every single Maldivian supports the Palestinian cause.” He strongly condemned the ongoing genocide and war crimes committed against the Palestinian people, reinforcing that the Maldives has always, and will continue to, support Palestine.
The Maldives’ longstanding advocacy for Palestine has been a key pillar of its foreign policy. In 2024, the Maldives co-sponsored a resolution supporting the admission of the State of Palestine as a full member state of the United Nations, a significant moment in the international recognition of Palestine. President Muizzu also welcomed the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) Advisory Opinion on the legal consequences of Israel’s policies and highlighted the Maldives’ written and oral submissions in support of the case.
Earlier this year, the Maldivian public showed overwhelming support for Palestine through a national telethon held in June, which raised over USD 1.2 million for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
