Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal acknowledged the pressing need to update the diving regulations established in 1991 which have become a significant concern for local divers and confirmed that revisions are forthcoming.
Addressing the audience at the Fuvahmulah Tourism Awards 2024 held in celebration of World Tourism Day, he highlighted that the Maldives is operating under severely outdated diving regulations presenting considerable obstacles. Echoing the worries of Fuvumulah’s divers who manage numerous dive centers.
Minister Faisal noted the current rule that mandates a 24-hour interval before flying after diving, contrasting it with other nations that permit flying 18 hours post-dive. He assured that the necessary amendments would be made after consulting with technical experts. The minister also assured that the review of these regulations would commence immediately after the government resumes post-weekend, with discussions to follow promptly.
“The regulations were established in 1991, and considering the advancements in Maldives’ diving activities, it’s evident that updates are necessary,” stated the minister.
At the event, the Minister announced that the government is in the process of establishing a dedicated department to enhance local tourism. He stated that this initiative would facilitate the provision of more efficient services.
“By doing so, we will enhance the focus on the islands. It will be a significant move toward success,” stated Faisal.
The minister highlighted that the expansion of tourism is currently hindered by the difficulty in securing bank loans. Consequently, negotiations are in progress with the Bank of Maldives, Maldives Islamic Bank, and various international entities to secure low-interest loans, he noted.
Minister Faisal expressed his anticipation that these loans would be available by the start of the first quarter of next year.
Additionally, he mentioned that the government is intent on augmenting the budget for the upcoming year to enhance the promotion of the Maldives as a prime tourist destination to overseas markets. Part of this initiative includes compiling a list of key tourist spots within the nation to focus on their targeted promotion, he explained.
Furthermore, he elaborated that efforts are being made to develop tourism in the southern regions, which involves exploring opportunities to attract more foreign airlines to these locales.
