The Addu Bridge project, a top priority for the Maldivian government, is moving forward as funding arrangements are being finalized. The project is crucial for enhancing connectivity and boosting tourism in the region.
Government Commitment
The bridge in Addu is a high priority for the government, with the project set to commence as soon as the necessary funds are secured. Minister Muththalib emphasized the government’s commitment, stating that the company awarded the project is currently arranging the funds while the government evaluates the financing proposals.
Funding and Project Timeline
“Under the agreement, the company has to arrange the money. However, the government will take a loan,” said Muththalib. The project will not be handed over to others until the funds are available, ensuring that the construction begins promptly. The financing proposal is currently under evaluation to determine its acceptability to the government.
Progress and Budget Allocation
The company responsible for the preliminary design and survey of the Addu Bridge project has completed the required survey work. This year’s budget includes MVR 30 million allocated for the survey of the Hithadhoo-Hulhumedhoo bridge. The Arab Contractors (Osman Ahmed Osman & Co.), with extensive experience in similar projects in the Middle East, are leading the project.
Presidential Promise and Tourism Impact
The Addu Bridge project is a key promise of President Mohammed Muizzu, signed during his first visit to Addu after the election. Once completed, the bridge will not only enhance local connectivity but also significantly boost tourism by making it easier for visitors to explore Addu and its attractions.
The successful completion of the Addu Bridge project is expected to bring a new wave of tourists to the region, enhancing the local economy and providing more opportunities for sustainable tourism development.
