The long-awaited Hankede project for integrated tourism has finally kicked off, heralding a new era of growth and prosperity for Addu City’s tourism sector.
The Fund Management Corporation (MFMC) has entrusted China National Electrical Engineering (CNEEC) with the development of Hankede, a significant milestone in the island’s journey towards becoming a premier tourist destination. The contract, inked on March 30 last year, marks a pivotal moment in Addu’s tourism landscape.
In a momentous ceremony on April 15, 2024, Home Minister Ali Ihusaan, MFMC Managing Director Ahmed Nazim, and a representative from CNEEC inaugurated the project, underscoring the collaborative efforts driving Addu’s tourism ambitions forward.
The financing for the Hankede project, secured through a loan agreement with the Bank of China in November 2023, solidifies the commitment to realizing Addu’s tourism potential.
The ambitious project aims to accommodate a staggering 2,082 tourists across a spectrum of luxurious accommodations, including:
- Two grand hotels boasting 600 beds each.
- Two deluxe hotels offering 320 beds each.
- A boutique hotel with 560 beds.
- Eight serviced apartments providing an additional 560 beds.
- A collection of beach villas, comprising eight two-bedroom villas totaling 32 beds and nine four-bedroom villas accommodating 72 beds.
With projections indicating the creation of 1,500 jobs in Addu City, the Hankede project promises not only a boost in tourism but also significant economic stimulus for the region. Anticipating an influx of 25,000 tourists, the project underscores Addu’s emergence as a sought-after destination on the global tourism map.
The MFMC, spearheading the project, remains steadfast in its commitment to facilitating land acquisition and leasing for real estate purposes, ensuring the seamless execution of the Hankede development.
As construction commences and anticipation mounts, Addu City stands on the cusp of a transformative journey, poised to redefine its identity as a beacon of hospitality and allure in the Maldives’ tourism landscape.
