By Erkaiym Tabyldieva, affectionately known as Erkaiym, has carved a unique path in hospitality. Starting at 17, she worked across various departments, from F&B to front office and sales. “I’ve been working since I was 17, so I work in different departments and different fields… I discovered my passion for inspections, training, and audits,” she shares. At Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, Erkaiym oversees health, safety, food safety, and sustainability, ensuring all procedures align with the resort’s high standards.
Pioneering Sustainability Initiatives
Erkaiym leads key sustainability initiatives under the Sun Care project, focusing on waste management, plastic and paper reduction, biodiversity conservation, bio farming, and local community support. “All activities and events we organize or initiate from the resort should be linked to the Sun Care initiative,” she notes. Sustainable practices are integrated into daily operations with segregated bins and a comprehensive waste management center. Education and training for staff are crucial components of their strategy.
Upholding High Hygiene Standards
Maintaining impeccable hygiene standards is a cornerstone of Erkaiym’s role. “I do a lot of inspections, regular audits, and training for our team members. We also bring in third-party companies to evaluate and audit us in terms of hygiene and food safety,” she explains. Despite challenges in procuring items on a remote island, Erkaiym believes luxury and sustainability can coexist. “Many people realize that luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand. Sustainability is actually the new luxury,” she asserts.
Future Goals and Passion for Sustainability
Erkaiym is focused on further strategies for food safety and sustainability, having achieved Travelife and HACCP certifications. “We aim to continue our collaboration with Travelife and maintain our HACCP certification. In the near future, we plan to apply for more certifications,” she reveals. Her dedication is fueled by her love for the Maldives and passion for sustainability and hygiene. “Sustainability links to everything. Every day when you wake up, you can make sustainable and eco-friendly choices,” she emphasizes. Erkaiym’s meticulous approach and advocacy for sustainable practices make her a pivotal force in balancing luxury and sustainability at Sun Siyam Iru Fushi.
