The Maldivian Parliament’s 241 Committee has commenced its review of a proposed amendment to the Immigration Act that would prohibit entry into the Maldives with Israeli passports. Submitted by MDP MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem of the Galolhu South constituency on May 29, the bill was accepted into parliamentary proceedings and referred to the National Security Services Committee (241 Committee) on June 10.
MP Ibrahim Falah, representing Inguraidhoo and the Parliamentary Group Leader of the PNC, confirmed today that the bill is now scheduled for deliberation in the 241 Committee. The review process is set to begin on Tuesday, with initial discussions focused on establishing a timeline for the bill’s review and completion. MP Falah shared that the committee plans to engage relevant agencies to gather expert input, with the goal of advancing the bill swiftly and effectively.
“Our intention is to conclude this matter as quickly as possible. As you know, President Dr. Muizzu is one of the strongest advocates for justice who condemns Israel’s attacks on innocent Palestinian civilians. Therefore, we are now starting this work to finish it quickly,” Falah said.
The proposed bill seeks to categorize Israeli passport holders and Israeli citizens using passports from other countries as individuals prohibited from entering the Maldives, in response to what the bill describes as Israel’s “ongoing genocide” against the Palestinian people. Though the 19th Parliament passed a resolution supporting the ban, this new legislation aims to formally integrate the prohibition within the Immigration Act to ensure enforceability.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has consistently demonstrated unwavering support for the Palestinian cause. Known for his resolute stance on justice, President Muizzu has actively condemned the violence faced by Palestinian civilians and continues to be a vocal advocate for their defense. This initiative to review and pass the proposed immigration amendment further underscores his administration’s commitment to solidarity with Palestine.
