Dhiraagu, the leading digital services provider in the Maldives, has announced a historic achievement, successfully completing the rollout of its high-speed Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband service to all inhabited islands across the nation.
The company celebrated the national milestone at a special ceremony held yesterday, marking the first time a Maldivian telecommunications company has achieved 100% nationwide fiber broadband coverage. This positions the Maldives among a select few countries globally to reach this level of digital infrastructure.
A Leap Towards a ‘Digital Maldives’
Dhiraagu’s accomplishment means that households on every inhabited island in the geographically challenging archipelago now have access to high-speed internet, significantly enhancing the nation’s digital backbone.
The CEO and Managing Director of Dhiraagu, Ismail Rasheed, stated that this extensive coverage is a major step towards establishing a “Digital Maldives.” He highlighted that this landmark project, which involved significant investments including submarine cable deployments, will unlock new opportunities for digital inclusion, remote working, education, and various other sectors across all island communities.
National Significance and Global Standing
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, acknowledged the achievement as a “historic and world-class one.” He noted that this milestone aligns with the government’s vision of a smart nation and addresses the long-standing difficulties many citizens faced in accessing reliable internet.
The completion of the fiber rollout establishes the largest high-speed data network in the Maldives, reinforcing the country’s connectivity and preparing it to thrive in a digitally connected future.
