With the completion of Dhiraagu high-speed fibre broadband network, the company has achieved a significant milestone in both the national and global telecommunication landscape. According to several data, only a few developed countries have successfully extended 100% fibre broadband coverage to their entire population. Broadband service has the potential to significantly accelerate a country’s socio-economic development. This is reflected in the inclusion of fibre broadband expansion as a central element in many nations’ development plans.
Likewise, this accomplishment by Dhiraagu is an important step towards achieving the government’s vision of ‘improving the quality and lowering the cost of internet services provided to different parts of the country’ and becoming a ‘smart nation.’
Speaking at the press conference, Dhiraagu CEO & MD, Mr. Ismail Rasheed announced that it is an honour for Dhiraagu to become the first company in the Maldives to extend high-speed fibre broadband connectivity to al inhabited islands across the country and thanked all customers across the nation for their support over the years.
Ismail further highlighted that as high-speed broadband is an essential tool in providing digital services, this remarkable achievement by Dhiraagu will result in enhancing the Maldives’ digital backbone and fuelling the growth of digital services across the country.
Additionally, he also stated that this milestone is an important step towards Dhiraagu’s commitment to providing high- quality services consistently to everyone in the Maldives. He further highlighted that this has paved the way to make Dhiraagu’s vision of ‘Digital Raajje’ a reality and would not have been possible without the support of several key stakeholders. In particular, he extended his heartfelt gratitude to the government, atoll councils, island councils and partners as well as all Dhiraagu staff who were actively involved in completing this extensive project.
Dhiraagu now has the largest high-speed data network in the nation with the widest coverage, providing fibre broadband internet access to all inhabited islands in the Maldives. This will enable greater digital inclusion in island communities at every corner of the country, allowing them greater digital access and more opportunities to thrive in the digital economy.
