False News is Extremely Damaging to the State: President Muizzu

In a powerful statement today, President Mohamed Muizzu addressed the deep-rooted problem of false news in the Maldives, asserting that the nation has suffered immense damage due to the spread of lies and misinformation. The President highlighted the destructive impact that such falsehoods have on individuals, families, and the entire state, warning that they ignite discord and corrode the moral fabric of society.

“Spreading false news, which destroys both oneself and the country, has become far too common,” President Muizzu stated. “Why do acts that corrupt our minds and our nation persist? Why is deception now considered a right when it sets ablaze the very fabric of our nation?”

President Muizzu stressed that the proliferation of falsehoods is a direct assault on the values of a 100% Islamic nation like the Maldives. He explained that lies and slander create a marketplace of immorality, undermining the religious, moral, and social foundations that hold the country together.

“Those who engage in such acts often fail to realize the immense harm they cause,” he said. “Don’t they understand the consequences of contributing to the destruction of our religious and social standards? Destroying the moral foundation of an entire nation is a grave insult.” The President further emphasized that false news not only damages personal relationships—between families, friends, and even co-workers—but it also leaves a lasting legacy of pain and suffering for generations to come. Entire communities are destabilized by lies, which can fracture the unity of the state itself.

“The pain caused by these lies reverberates through families and society at large. In some cases, false news has done immense damage to our entire Dhivehi state,” the President noted.

Reflecting on the historical origins of such tactics, President Muizzu drew a parallel to the hypocrites of Medina, who spread falsehoods to divide and disrupt their communities. He called for renewed vigilance and a collective effort to stand against misinformation, underscoring that protecting the truth is essential to safeguarding the country’s unity and stability.
