In a historic moment for the Maldives, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will address the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the first time in the nation’s history. This milestone reflects the growing international influence of the Maldives under President Muizzu’s leadership and highlights his commitment to global peace and security.
As announced by the President’s Office, President Muizzu will be traveling to New York this month to participate in several key meetings, including the 79th session of the UN General Assembly and a high-level UNSC debate. Presidential Spokesperson Heena Walid proudly stated, “This is the first time in the history of the Maldives that a Maldivian President has participated in a UN Security Council debate.”
The open debate, titled Leadership for Peace, scheduled for the 25th of this month, will focus on global security and peace—key issues that resonate with the Maldives as it continues to advocate for climate action, sustainable development, and global cooperation.
The UNSC, comprising the world’s five permanent powers—United States, Russia, China, Britain, and France—along with elected member states, serves as the most powerful decision-making body of the United Nations. While the Maldives is not a permanent member, this opportunity to speak at a UNSC debate signifies the nation’s growing voice on the world stage.
In addition to his UNSC address, President Muizzu will attend the Summit of the Future Side Event, hosted by the Maldives. The summit, titled A Vision for an Intelligence-Driven Future for the Maldives, is set to showcase the nation’s commitment to innovation and future-driven policies.
Moreover, President Muizzu is expected to deliver a speech at Princeton University, reflecting his dedication to fostering education and global dialogue.
This landmark visit demonstrates the government’s remarkable diplomatic strides under President Muizzu’s leadership, and it solidifies the Maldives’ place as a respected voice in the international community.
