Google to Establish Major Submarine Cable Hub in Addu City, Maldives

Google has announced a significant investment in the Maldives, confirming plans to establish an international submarine cable landing station and network facility in Hithadhoo, Addu City. The project is poised to dramatically boost the nation’s digital connectivity and solidify its role as a regional digital hub in the Indian Ocean.

The Maldivian government, through the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, formally welcomed the decision on Monday, highlighting the investment as a strong signal of global confidence in the country’s stable and investor-friendly environment.

A New Gateway for Global Connectivity

The new facility in Hithadhoo is a key component of Google’s new Dhivaru Trans-Indian Ocean subsea cable system, which is designed to connect the Maldives, Christmas Island, and Oman. The multi-million-dollar investment is expected to serve as a strategic digital gateway, strengthening connectivity and resilience across Asia, Oceania, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.

• Regional Digital Hub: The facility is designed to support multiple international submarine cable systems, effectively positioning the Maldives as a crucial interconnection point on the global digital map.

• National Resilience: The Addu City station, alongside existing and planned landing points in the north (Kulhudhuffushi) and center (Greater Malé), will create a geographically distributed national network, significantly enhancing the country’s digital resilience.

• Advanced Capabilities: The new hub will offer enhanced cable switching, local content caching, and colocation capabilities.

President Muizzu Welcomes Landmark Project

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu praised the development on his official X account, describing the project as a major step toward advancing the nation’s goal of becoming a “diversified, inclusive, and digitally empowered economy.” The decision follows high-level discussions between the President and Google executives in New York in September 2024.

The Ministry of Economic Development stated that the project is expected to stimulate economic growth in high-value sectors such as cloud services, fintech, and digital content, supporting the government’s drive to diversify the economy beyond tourism and create high-skilled, future-ready employment opportunities for Maldivians.

The implementation will be supported by local telecommunications operators, Dhiraagu and Ooredoo Maldives, ensuring the project benefits from local expertise and knowledge transfer, which is seen as vital for its long-term success.
