Government Leads Historic Agricultural Advancement with MNU’s New Faculty

In a groundbreaking step towards agricultural innovation and education, the Maldives National University (MNU) hosted a land handover ceremony at the Northern Thoddoo Council Office, marking the launch of its Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences. This transformative project is part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to enhance food security and modernize the nation’s agricultural sector.

The government’s allocation of 80,000 acres of land in Thoddoo underscores its commitment to empowering youth and fostering economic growth. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, members of the Thoddoo Council, and senior officials of MNU.

A Revolutionary Step for Agriculture

The newly established faculty will house four key departments:

  1. Horticulture
  2. Plant Protection
  3. Soil and Water Management
  4. Food Sciences and Technology

Each department will feature state-of-the-art laboratories, enabling students to gain practical experience and contribute to the development of innovative solutions in agriculture.

President Dr. Muizzu stated, “Today marks a monumental achievement in our journey to modernize agriculture in the Maldives. This project reflects my administration’s unwavering commitment to developing sectors that are crucial for our nation’s sustainability and self-reliance.”

A Boost to Food Security and Economy

This initiative aligns with the government’s goal of achieving food security and increasing agricultural productivity. By introducing advanced technologies and fostering research, the faculty will empower students to contribute to the country’s agricultural sector and make it internationally competitive.

The Minister of Agriculture highlighted, “With the establishment of this faculty, we are not just creating an educational institution but laying the foundation for a thriving agricultural future. This will ensure that the Maldives is better equipped to meet its food demands while opening new avenues for economic growth.”

Community-Centric Development

The project also brings tangible benefits to the Thoddoo community:

  • Access to Higher Education: Residents will have opportunities to pursue advanced agricultural studies locally.
  • Economic Opportunities: The faculty’s presence will stimulate the local economy and promote sustainable development.

A Government-Led Vision for Growth

Under President Muizzu’s leadership, the Maldives continues to invest in projects that secure a prosperous and resilient future. This initiative highlights the administration’s focus on leveraging education and technology to address national challenges and unlock potential in untapped sectors.

The Maldives National University and the government jointly expressed their gratitude to the Thoddoo Council and other stakeholders for their support in realizing this ambitious vision.

“This faculty will transform not only the agricultural sector but also the lives of countless individuals across the Maldives,” the President added.

This project reaffirms the government’s role as a catalyst for innovation and progress, paving the way for a sustainable and self-reliant Maldives.
