The Spokesperson of the Government, Heena Waleed, has strongly denied allegations suggesting that the government is planning to introduce a bill to regulate journalism and the Internet. Addressing the rumors via a tweet, she reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding media freedom and promoting self-regulation.
“The government is not making any effort to introduce a bill to regulate journalism and the Internet. Such a bill will not be included in the government’s legislative agenda. There is no intention of introducing such a bill in the future,” the Spokesperson stated.
She emphasized that from the very first day of President Dr. Muizzu’s administration, the government has prioritized the establishment and maintenance of the widest possible freedom for the media. The government’s policy, she reiterated, is to deregulate the media and allow for a robust self-regulatory system.
This statement aims to dispel concerns and underscore the administration’s unwavering dedication to media freedom, a cornerstone of its democratic governance approach.
