Landmark Reopening: Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort Set for Grand Return, Poised to Revitalize Addu City Tourism

MALE’, MALDIVES – September 30, 2025 – The Ministry of Tourism and Environment today announced a major boost for the Maldives’ southern economy, confirming the forthcoming reopening of the renowned Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa, Addu City.

The resort, which has remained closed since March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is officially slated to resume operations by 31 December 2025, fulfilling a key presidential pledge by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

A Pillar of Addu’s Economy Returns

The resort, leased by the Government to Addu Investments Private Limited for development and operation, was previously a vital pillar of Addu City’s economy. Since its opening in 2009, the property made significant contributions to local livelihoods, employing over 500 staff, and enhancing connectivity via Gan International Airport.

Following comprehensive discussions with Addu Investments Private Limited and relevant stakeholders, the Government confirmed a firm commitment from the company to relaunch the resort before the end of the year.

How the Reopening Will Promote Tourism in Addu

The return of Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort is heralded as a game-changer that will significantly promote and diversify tourism in Addu City and the wider southern region:

1. Economic and Social Revitalization: The reopening will immediately bring renewed economic and social benefits to Addu City, generating hundreds of jobs and revitalizing local commerce and supply chains.

2. Strengthening Tourism Diversification: By attracting high-end international clientele, the resort will strengthen tourism diversification across the Maldives. It helps shift the focus away from the highly concentrated central atolls, providing tourists with a premier destination experience in the south.

3. Promoting Outer Atoll Development: The move directly supports the Government’s vision of expanding tourism opportunities and promoting overall development in the outer atolls. The influx of high-value tourism is expected to encourage further investment in infrastructure and services in Addu.

4. Enhanced Connectivity: The increased tourist traffic is highly likely to boost the frequency and capacity of international and domestic flights into Gan International Airport, improving overall connectivity for the entire southern region.

The Government welcomed this positive development, extending its appreciation to Shangri-La’s management and Addu Investments Private Limited for their commitment to reopening this landmark property, signaling a vibrant new chapter for Addu City’s tourism industry.
