The surge in private jet traffic comes on the heels of the airport’s reopening in September following a runway expansion project. Despite a temporary closure from June to September for the upgrade, the airport recorded strong aircraft movements throughout 2023. The enhanced runway now accommodates larger private jets, further cementing Maafaru’s status as the gateway of choice for affluent travelers heading to the Maldives’ world-renowned luxury resorts.
Enhanced Capacity for Peak Tourism Season
Island Aviation Services attributes the December uptick to the timely completion of the expansion project ahead of the Maldives’ peak holiday season. The upgraded facilities have significantly enhanced the airport’s ability to cater to high-end travelers, with the company describing Maafaru as an increasingly attractive destination for the world’s elite.
Mumthaz Ali, General Manager for Airports at Island Aviation Services Ltd., highlighted the airport’s strides in passenger services and operational efficiency. “The progress achieved last year demonstrates our commitment to innovation and meeting passenger needs. We’ve introduced additional services like ground transport and apron work, and our airport is set for a major transformation to provide even greater convenience,” Mumthaz said.
