Malé, August 10, 2024 — In a significant diplomatic development, the Maldives and India are poised to normalize and strengthen their bilateral relations following the official visit of India’s External Affairs Minister, Subramanian Jaishankar. The visit signals India’s readiness to deepen its partnership with the Maldives, marking a new chapter in the long-standing ties between the two nations.
During the visit, President Mohamed Muizzu assured Minister Jaishankar that his government is committed to taking Maldives-India relations to new heights. The President expressed his gratitude to India for its continued assistance, highlighting the importance of the projects undertaken with Indian support in promoting the economic and social development of the Maldives.
One of the key outcomes of the visit is the expectation that Indian tourist arrivals to the Maldives will see a significant increase, further boosting the island nation’s vital tourism sector.
In a ceremony held to mark the occasion, the Government of India completed and handed over water and sewerage systems in 28 villages, part of an $800 million line of credit issued by the Export-Import Bank of India. The President praised these projects as essential to improving the living conditions of Maldivians and driving economic growth in rural areas.
President Muizzu also acknowledged India’s role in facilitating financial arrangements, including the deferment of a $50 million debt payment and the provision of food quotas for two years. He extended his thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government for their consistent support, reaffirming that India remains one of the Maldives’ closest and most reliable partners.
Recalling his participation in Prime Minister Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, President Muizzu emphasized the warmth and hospitality extended during his visit to India, which laid the groundwork for the current strengthening of bilateral ties.
In his meetings with Indian President Droupadi Murmu, President Muizzu discussed collaborative efforts to further the development and progress of both nations. He expressed hope that Maldives-India relations will continue to flourish in the coming years, underlining the importance of cooperation for regional stability and prosperity.
