President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is set to depart tomorrow for the 4th United Nations International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) taking place in Antigua and Barbuda. The four-day conference, held from May 27th to 30th in the capital city of St. John’s, will see President Muizzu join world leaders in discussing critical issues facing small island nations.
A press conference held this morning by the President’s Office confirmed President Muizzu’s attendance and participation in the conference. He will be accompanied by a senior government delegation, including Environment Minister Thorig Ibrahim and Special Envoy for Climate Change Ali Shareef.
President to Address Conference and Advocate for Sustainable Tourism
President’s Office spokesperson Heena Waleed announced that President Muizzu is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at the conference. Additionally, he will participate in seven separate statements highlighting the Maldives’ ongoing response to climate change and its vision for a sustainable future.
The conference theme, “Charting the Course Toward Resilient Prosperity,” aligns perfectly with the Maldives’ goals. President Muizzu’s participation is expected to pave the way for new opportunities in sustainable tourism development, a crucial sector for the Maldivian economy.
The Maldives shares many of the same challenges as other Small Island Developing States, including rising sea levels and the impact of climate change. This conference provides a valuable platform for President Muizzu to advocate for the needs of the Maldives and collaborate with other island nations to build a more resilient future.
