Maldives Sees Recovery in Indian Tourist Market Amid Strategic Push

The Maldives is witnessing a gradual recovery in its Indian tourist market, a key segment that faced challenges in 2024 due to diplomatic tensions. After a significant decline in arrivals—from 56,208 in Q1 2023 to 34,847 in Q1 2024—sparked by a boycott following controversial remarks by Maldivian officials, recent data shows a 10% increase in Indian visitors from September to October 2024. India remains among the top five source markets, contributing significantly to the Maldives’ goal of 2.3 million tourists in 2025.

The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has launched targeted campaigns to rebuild confidence among Indian travelers. High-profile promotions, including Bollywood collaborations, travel fairs in major Indian cities, and social media campaigns, emphasize the Maldives’ luxury resorts, pristine beaches, and cultural affinity with India. The “Visit Maldives” initiative also highlights tailored packages for Indian families, honeymooners, and solo travelers, with direct flight connectivity from Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru enhanced through partnerships with Indian airlines.

Despite the rebound, challenges persist. New tax hikes, including increased airport and green taxes, could deter budget-conscious Indian tourists, who are increasingly drawn to competitors like Thailand and Seychelles. Industry experts urge the Maldives to balance revenue goals with affordability to maintain competitiveness. With Indian arrivals projected to grow by 8% in 2025, the Maldives is banking on sustained diplomatic goodwill and innovative marketing to solidify its appeal as a premier destination for Indian travelers.
