The Maldives’ tourism sector is flourishing, with active tourist establishments rising to 1,227, a 1.7 percent increase from the 1,207 facilities recorded at the end of 2024, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Environment. This growth has expanded the country’s total bed capacity to 64,373, reflecting significant development in tourism infrastructure.
The increase spans 175 resorts, 877 guesthouses, 159 safari vessels, and 16 hotels. Resorts lead with 44,047 beds, hosting 72.8 percent of tourists. Guesthouses provide 14,854 beds, accounting for 22.3 percent of stays, while hotels offer 2,310 beds, accommodating 2.7 percent of visitors. Safari vessels contribute 3,162 beds, serving a growing niche market.
Visitor numbers have climbed sharply, with 1,195,693 tourists arriving this year, up 9.5 percent from 1,092,367 in the same period of 2024. China tops the source markets with 163,370 visitors, followed by Russia (139,388) and the United Kingdom (114,703).
Following last year’s milestone of two million tourists, the government aims to attract 2.3 million visitors by the end of 2025. The Ministry of Tourism and Environment is implementing initiatives to bolster the sector, focusing on sustainable growth and diversification to cement the Maldives’ status as a premier global travel destination.
