Maldives Tourism Targets Record Numbers in 2025 with Unique Ramadan Offerings

Malé, Maldives – February 21, 2025 – The Maldives is gearing up for a record-breaking tourism year in 2025, aiming to welcome 2.3 million visitors, as announced by President Mohamed Muizzu. With tourism driving nearly 30% of the nation’s GDP, the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives) is rolling out innovative campaigns to boost arrivals, including a special focus on cultural experiences during Ramadan, expected to begin around March 1, pending the crescent moon sighting.

Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting and reflection, offers a unique window into Maldivian traditions, blending spiritual depth with the archipelago’s famed luxury appeal. While daytime festivities are subdued due to fasting from dawn to dusk, evenings come alive with vibrant iftar celebrations—meals breaking the fast. Resorts and local islands alike host communal iftar feasts featuring traditional Maldivian dishes like garudhiya (fish broth), mashuni (tuna and coconut), and sweet treats such as bondi bai. Tourists are invited to join these gatherings, fostering cultural exchange and showcasing the Maldives’ warm hospitality.

Beyond dining, Ramadan in 2025 will feature nighttime activities tailored for visitors. Local communities on inhabited islands like Hulhumalé plan cultural performances, including boduberu drumming and traditional dances, offering an authentic glimpse into Maldivian heritage. Resorts, meanwhile, will host special events such as stargazing sessions and Quran recitations, balancing relaxation with reverence. The month concludes with Eid al-Fitr, around March 30 or 31, marked by festive celebrations, family gatherings, and resort-hosted events like beachfront feasts and live music.

To support this tourism surge, Maldivian Airlines is launching wide-body flights to cities like Beijing and Shanghai in January, enhancing connectivity. With its pristine beaches and rich Ramadan offerings, the Maldives aims to captivate travelers seeking both luxury and cultural immersion in 2025.
