Tourist arrivals to the Maldives have surpassed 900,000 so far this year, according to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism. As of 14 May, a total of 901,210 tourists have visited the island nation, reflecting an 8% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
The ministry reports an average of 5,000 tourist arrivals per day, showcasing the continued strength of the Maldives as a top global travel destination.
The data reveals that resorts remain the most popular choice of accommodation, with 71% of tourists—640,026 visitors—opting to spend their holidays at these luxury properties. Guesthouses attracted 23.5% of arrivals, amounting to 211,584 tourists, while hotels hosted 3% or 26,634 visitors. Additionally, 22,380 tourists, or 2.5%, enjoyed their stay on liveaboard vessels.
In terms of source markets, China leads the way with 103,072 arrivals, accounting for 11.4% of total tourist numbers. Russia followed closely with 97,123 tourists, while the United Kingdom contributed 93,043 arrivals. Italy and Germany also remained strong markets, with 79,557 and 69,283 arrivals respectively.
The Maldivian government has set an ambitious target of 2.5 million tourist arrivals for 2025, as part of ongoing efforts to boost the country’s economy through sustainable tourism development.
Officials say the strong performance in the first five months of the year provides optimism that this target is within reach.
