Maldivian Airlines Launches New Airbus A330 with First Flight to Chengdu

Maldivian Airlines’ new wide-body Airbus A330 embarked on its inaugural flight to Chengdu, China, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s operations. The flight departed tonight, with strong ticket sales indicating growing demand for travel between China and the Maldives.

Island Aviation Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas highlighted the success of the route, stating that 70% of seats have already been booked. “The flight tonight is carrying passengers, and we anticipate a robust demand for Maldivian flights to China in the coming months,” Iyas noted.

The new Airbus A330 offers affordable ticket options for travelers. A return ticket to Chengdu costs $688 (MVR 10,610), while return tickets to Beijing and Shanghai are priced at $788 (MVR 12,151) and $777 (MVR 11,981), respectively.

Flights to Beijing will commence on January 24, followed by Shanghai on January 27, further solidifying Maldivian Airlines’ presence in the Chinese market.

Enhanced Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Airbus A330 can accommodate 260 passengers across business, premium economy, and economy classes. With a cargo capacity of 10 tons, the aircraft offers enhanced logistics capabilities. Passengers can also enjoy a generous baggage allowance of 40 kilograms per traveler.

Future Expansion Plans

The introduction of the Airbus A330 increases Maldivian Airlines’ fleet size and aligns with its plans for global expansion. The airline is set to add another Airbus A330 later this year, which will enable the launch of direct flights to European cities.

This strategic move underscores Maldivian Airlines’ commitment to enhancing connectivity and catering to the increasing demand for international travel, positioning the Maldives as a key travel hub in the region.
