Maldivian has recently announced a significant decrease in charges for the transportation of surfboards, addressing concerns raised by a resident regarding the previously high fees.
The airline’s decision, made public yesterday, comes after a query was posted on the Q&A platform ‘Raeesge Javaab’ by Ahmed Rasheed, a resident of GDh. Gadhdhoo. Rasheed emphasized the financial strain placed on tourists visiting the island for surfing activities due to the exorbitant surfboard charges.
Rasheed pointed out that tourists incurred expenses of approximately USD 800, inclusive of round-trip airfare and surfboard charges, when traveling to Gadhdhoo, a location renowned for its exceptional surfing spots.
Under the updated fee structure, charges for large surfboards measuring 86” x 24”, with a thickness or width ranging between six to 10 inches, have been reduced by 33 per cent.
A new classification has been introduced for small surfboards with a width of up to five inches, resulting in a 66 per cent reduction from the original rates.
Gadhdhoo, located in the southern region of the Maldives, is home to some of the nation’s premier surf points. The island’s strategic location in the southern region of the Maldives contributes to the creation of ideal wave conditions, drawing surfers from around the globe seeking the perfect ride.
Tiger Stripes surf point, in particular, has become synonymous with Gadhdhoo’s surfing identity. Surfers flock to this spot to challenge themselves against the powerful and consistent waves, making it a must-visit destination for those in search of an exhilarating surfing adventure.
