In a landmark development aimed at enhancing tourist convenience and bolstering ties between the Maldives and China, the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has inked an exclusive agreement with China’s widely used mobile payment platform, Weixin Pay, commonly known as WeChat.
The agreement was formalized during a ceremony held at ITB China, with Mr. Zihuny Rasheed, Deputy Managing Director of MMPRC, and Mr. ATN Ng, Regional Director for Southeast Asia at WeChat, signing the pivotal pact.
Under the terms of the agreement, WeChat users will gain access to seamless services at select Maldivian establishments, including Duty Free outlets, Velaa Private Island, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, and Sala Thai Restaurant.
This collaboration also marks a significant milestone for the Maldives tourism sector as WeChat Pay becomes available at Bank of Maldives’ (BML) Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals. The service has been inaugurated at the duty-free section of Velana International Airport, enabling businesses to accept quick and secure QR payments via the app.
Expressing his enthusiasm about the partnership, Mr. Zihuny highlighted the strategic importance of leveraging WeChat’s widespread popularity to promote Maldives tourism and facilitate seamless transactions for Chinese visitors.
WeChat Pay stands as the leading mobile payment platform in China, with its integration poised to streamline payment experiences for Chinese travelers visiting the Maldives.
