MTCC Awarded Contract to Launch Government Taxi Line Service

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded the contract to introduce the government’s taxi line service, marking a significant step towards modernizing public transportation in the country.

At a special ceremony held at Meeruma, Director General of the Ministry of Transport, Ahmed Shamim, and MTCC Managing Director, Ahmed Saudee, signed the agreement. Under this initiative, MTCC will operate the taxi service using electric vehicles (EVs), modeled after internationally recognized ride-hailing services such as Uber and Grab.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ahmed Saudee emphasized that the new service aims to address transportation challenges faced by the public while promoting environmentally friendly mobility solutions. He highlighted that the initiative will also create numerous job opportunities.

“We will offer both full-time and part-time employment, opening doors for those currently unemployed. This will be highly beneficial to the public,” Saudee stated. He added that prospective part-time employees would undergo special training sessions to familiarize them with their role and encourage safe driving practices.

The government taxi line will be rolled out in three phases. The first phase, set for this year, will launch in Malé, Hulhumalé, and Velana International Airport. The second phase, scheduled for 2026-2027, will extend the service to Villimalé and Thilafushi. By 2028-2029, the service will reach Rasmalé, Giraavaru, Hulhumalé Phase 2, Fuvahmulah, and Kulhudhuffushi.

Once fully operational, the government taxi service will be available 24/7, ensuring reliable and accessible transportation for residents and visitors alike.
