NBAM Calls for Urgent Development of Diyaneru Falhu to Resolve Industry Harbor Crisis

The President of the National Boating Association of Maldives (NBAM), Ismail Sharif, has issued a formal call to action for a permanent solution to the persistent harbor shortages crippling the country’s boating sector.

Addressing stakeholders at the Maldives Marine Expo sponsor signing ceremony today, Sharif urged the government to honor the pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to develop Diyaneru Falhu into a dedicated “safe harbor” for the industry.

Sharif identified the scarcity of lagoon and harbor space as the single greatest obstacle currently facing maritime businesses. He noted that the industry’s future hinges on the government’s ability to provide secure, specialized docking facilities.

“The realization of Diyaneru Falhu as a safe harbor is a collective hope for the entire industry,” Sharif said. “It is essential not only for safety but also for creating a stable environment where Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) can finally see real growth.”

The “Backbone” of the Blue Economy

Describing the Maldives Marine Expo as more than just a trade show, Sharif characterized the event as the primary engine for the nation’s “Blue Economy.” He emphasized its role as a vital platform for networking, innovation, and industry-wide collaboration.

The NBAM President outlined several key objectives for this year’s exhibition, aimed at modernizing the maritime landscape:

Technological Advancement: Showcasing the latest in global maritime tools and engine technology.

Market Expansion: Connecting local boat builders and service providers with new commercial opportunities.

Youth Empowerment: Highlighting career pathways to attract younger generations to the maritime profession.

Sharif concluded by expressing his gratitude to the sponsors and partners, stating that their continued investment is the bedrock of the industry’s success. He remains optimistic that with government support, this year’s Expo will mark a turning point for the Maldivian boating community.
