Operational Tourist Facilities in Maldives See Slight Decline

The number of operational tourist accommodation establishments across the Maldives has decreased, according to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism on Thursday.

As of April 12, the total number of operational tourist facilities across the island nation stood at 1,196, marking a slight drop from previous counts. The data reveals that these facilities include 175 resorts, 842 guesthouses, 15 hotels, and 156 liveaboard vessels.

Guesthouses are currently operational across 111 islands in 20 atolls, while hotels are active on nine islands of eight atolls. Resorts continue to dominate the industry, operational across 175 islands of 19 atolls.

The Ministry highlighted that 97 percent of the total tourist bed capacity remains in operation. Of the 64,633 tourist beds available, resorts occupy 45,123, guesthouses 14,364, hotels 2,038, and liveaboard vessels 3,108. Bed capacity distribution shows that 69 percent are in resorts, followed by 23 percent in guesthouses, five percent in liveaboards, and three percent in hotels.

Kaafu Atoll leads in tourism facilities, boasting 58 resorts, eight hotels, and 300 guesthouses. Alif Dhaal and Alif Alif Atolls follow with 16 and 12 resorts respectively, and a combined total of 250 guesthouses.

Other notable figures include:

  • Raa Atoll: 17 resorts, one hotel, seven guesthouses
  • Baa Atoll: 16 resorts, one hotel, 72 guesthouses
  • Vaavu Atoll: Five resorts, one hotel, 55 guesthouses
  • Fuvahmulah City: 27 guesthouses
  • Addu City (Seenu Atoll): Two resorts, one hotel, 19 guesthouses

Despite the recent decline in operational facilities, the Maldives continues to expand its tourism infrastructure, offering a wide array of accommodation options for international travelers. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the country’s position as a leading global tourist destination, ensuring top-tier services and unforgettable experiences for visitors.
