The theme for this year’s General Debate is “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations.” This theme speaks directly to the need for collective action, encouraging nations to unite in their efforts to promote global peace, protect human dignity, and pursue sustainable development that benefits both present and future generations.

During the General Assembly, President Muizzu will address the global community, reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to international cooperation in tackling climate change, safeguarding human rights, and achieving the SDGs. As a nation particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, the Maldives continues to play a leading role in advocating for urgent global climate action, drawing attention to the need for small island states to be protected and supported in their development journey.

The 79th session of the UNGA will feature high-level discussions on how the world can accelerate progress towards achieving the SDGs. Key topics will include poverty reduction, combating climate change, and fostering global partnerships that promote peace and prosperity.

In line with the Maldives’ ongoing diplomatic efforts, President Muizzu’s participation reflects his administration’s dedication to global peace, sustainable development, and ensuring that no nation or community is left behind. His presence at the General Assembly highlights the Maldives’ commitment to playing a proactive role on the international stage, advocating for solutions that not only benefit the nation but also contribute to the well-being of the global community.

The 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, often referred to as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. President Muizzu’s address is expected to highlight the Maldives’ progress in areas such as climate action, marine conservation, and renewable energy, while also urging the international community to work together in accelerating the implementation of these critical goals.

As the 79th session of the UNGA unfolds, President Muizzu’s participation underscores the Maldives’ role as a key player in the global movement for sustainable development and its unwavering commitment to ensuring that all nations, particularly vulnerable ones, are given the support and resources they need to thrive.
