President Muizzu Announces Bold Expansion into Untapped Tourism Atolls, Eyes Halal Tourism Potential

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced a major initiative to unlock the tourism potential in several atolls across the Maldives that have historically seen little to no resort development. In a statement shared today, President Muizzu reiterated his commitment to fulfilling a key pledge from his Manifesto and his February address to Parliament.

The President highlighted that atolls such as Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Thaa, Laamu, and Addu City will now be at the forefront of this new tourism push. The government’s approach involves a multi-pronged strategy that includes offering targeted concessions, investment incentives, enhancing public infrastructure, and implementing focused marketing campaigns.

“These efforts are designed to mobilize investments and catalyze further economic activities in these regions,” the President stated, emphasizing that the time is ripe to open the “next chapter” of the Maldivian tourism industry.

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment is expected to announce further details in the coming week.

This expansion comes at a time when the global Halal tourism sector is booming. Valued at over USD 255 billion in 2022, the market is projected to grow to nearly USD 365 billion by 2030, driven by increasing demand from Muslim travelers seeking destinations that offer culturally sensitive services, Halal food, privacy, and faith-compliant hospitality.

The Maldives, with its natural appeal, is uniquely positioned to tap into this growing sector. President Muizzu’s commitment to opening new regions—many with predominantly local populations—could align well with the ethos of Halal tourism, offering both economic upliftment for remote atolls and authentic experiences for travelers.

This move signals the government’s intent to diversify tourism away from traditional luxury-only models and bring more inclusivity, both geographically and culturally, to the Maldivian tourism landscape.
