President Muizzu: Waste Management Services to Begin in All Maldivian Islands by Year-End

President Mohamed Muizzu has announced that waste management services will commence in all islands of the Maldives by the end of this year. The President made this declaration while addressing the residents of Dhidhdhoo during his visit to Haa Alif Atoll today.

Speaking at the gathering, President Muizzu underscored the importance of waste management, stating that it is a fundamental necessity for all villages. He assured the people of Dhidhdhoo that significant steps have already been taken to establish the service in their island, with the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) setting up its office and hiring staff in preparation for the commencement of services.

President Muizzu revealed that he had instructed WAMCO Managing Director Mujthaba Jaleel and Finance Minister Moosa Zameer to ensure all necessary arrangements are completed for WAMCO’s service launch in Dhidhdhoo by the beginning of the upcoming Month of Ramadan.

“That’s what they both assured us. It’s just a matter of days now. They have informed me that WAMCO’s service will be operational by the start of the Holy Month of Ramadan. So, I am looking forward to starting in February at the earliest,” he stated.

The President also highlighted that this year’s national budget has allocated resources to establish waste management services in all islands of the Maldives by the end of 2025. He explained that waste management centers of varying capacities would be set up based on the population size of each island.

“For islands with a population of fewer than 500, the centers will be smaller in scale. However, every island will have an operational waste management service within the year,” President Muizzu affirmed.

Furthermore, he elaborated that WAMCO’s services will be expanded to cities, atoll-administered islands, and other locations identified under the company’s business plan. This initiative is part of the government’s broader commitment to improving sanitation and environmental management across the nation.

President Muizzu’s ongoing tour of 10 islands in Haa Alif Atoll aims to engage directly with communities and address key concerns, including waste management, infrastructure, and development projects.
