Reimagining Luxury: Soneva Founders Launch a New Era with Sosei

Renowned hospitality pioneers Sonu and Eva Shivdasani, the creative minds behind the iconic ultra-luxury brands Six Senses and Soneva, are embarking on a new chapter. They have officially unveiled their latest venture: a new hotel brand called Sosei.

The Shivdasanis are credited with revolutionizing high-end travel and popularizing the concept of “barefoot luxury” with their philosophy of “no shoes, no news.” Their groundbreaking approach at Soneva Fushi in the Maldives, which opened in 1995, redefined the global standard for luxury by seamlessly blending sustainability, holistic wellness, and authentic, rustic design.

As exclusively reported by Travel + Leisure Asia, the name “Sosei” is a Japanese word meaning “rebirth,” a fitting title for the new brand. It will draw heavily from Japanese principles of wellness and hospitality, a creative shift for the couple. Their plans are ambitious, with scouting already underway for locations in Japan, the Arctic Circle, the European mountains, South Africa, and other parts of Asia. The Shivdasanis expect to finalize several deals by the end of the year.

The launch of Sosei follows a significant personal and professional transition for the couple. Earlier this year, they sold their majority stake in Soneva, marking their official departure from the brand’s day-to-day operations. For Sonu Shivdasani, who has been successfully undergoing treatment for lymphoma since January 2024, the new project represents a personal rebirth. He continues his treatment while channeling his energy and focus into Sosei.

While Soneva became famous for its secluded island retreats, Sosei will have a more diverse footprint. The new properties are planned for a mix of exotic destinations and major cities, offering a fresh take on their signature style. The goal remains the same: to create intimate spaces where luxury, wellbeing, and environmental responsibility can coexist, continuing their lifelong mission of redefining hospitality.

Sonu, who was awarded an OBE in 2023 for his contributions to tourism, sustainability, and charity, has always championed this harmonious blend. “People would say: ‘If it’s sustainable, it can’t be luxurious. Or if it’s luxurious, it can’t be good for you.’ We proved that you can do all of that,” he told Travel + Leisure Asia. With Sosei, the couple is set to prove it all over again, promising a new era of conscious and sophisticated travel.
