A new chapter in local industry began yesterday as a salt production factory officially opened in Dhidhdhoo, with operations already underway to export cooking salt to Japan.
The factory is a joint venture between Maldivian company M Deep Investment and a Japanese partner, established in collaboration with the Dhidhdhoo Council. The initiative marks a significant step in diversifying the island’s economy and boosting international trade.
Speaking to media, Dhidhdhoo Council President Abdullah Rasheed highlighted the importance of the project for the local community. “This is one of the lands opened by the council for investment, and a Japanese company was interested in opening it,” he said. “The factory was started a year ago to provide land rent to the council and employment opportunities for the villagers.”
According to Rasheed, the company has already begun extracting salt from the sea and sent samples to Japan for testing purposes. With the successful launch, it is expected that more consistent export operations will follow soon.
The project is expected to provide economic benefits to the island, including job creation and increased engagement with international markets.
