Muhammed Thakurufaanu is most famous for liberating the country from Portuguese occupation back in the 1550s. Sultan Muhammed Thakurufaanu travelled on the famous battleship, namely “Kalhu Oh Fummi” he built, making frequent stops at islands fighting colonial Portuguese power heading towards the capital Male’ island where he defeated the Portuguese garrison leader, Andreas Andreas (or sometimes referred as Viyazoaru) and claimed freedom for the Maldivian people.
The legacy of his heroism is celebrated every year as the National Day of Maldives. He was given the title of ‘Savaadheeththa’ in recognition of his bravery; hence the name ‘Savaadheeththa Dhathuru’ was chosen for this event which is designed to trace the journey taken by Sultan Muhammed Thakurufaanu.
Savaadheeththa Dhathuru is an exclusive tour through the Maldivian history, highlighting memorials dedicated to Sultan Muhammed Thakurufaanu, and visiting historic sites related to his endeavor.
