STELCO Establishes Mechanical Training Centre in Thulusdhoo to Bolster Engineering Expertise

Male’ City, Maldives – The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has launched a state-of-the-art mechanical training centre in Thulusdhoo, designed to train 100 individuals simultaneously. The facility aims to strengthen the engineering workforce in the Maldives and reduce the costs associated with overseas training.

The initiative comes in response to the increasing number of Maldivians pursuing engineering degrees abroad, often at significant personal or corporate expense. Speaking to Miharu, STELCO Regional Department General Manager Mohamed Yasir highlighted that sending just four employees abroad for a 15-day training program costs the company over MVR 400,000 annually.

To address this, STELCO decided to establish a local training facility, which will provide employees and aspiring engineers with a stress-free learning environment closer to home.

Thulusdhoo Training Centre Highlights

  • Comprehensive Training Infrastructure: The centre will house a range of training rooms, including those for electrical, mechanical, and control systems, as well as MVHV (Medium Voltage and High Voltage) rooms.
  • Real-World Equipment: The facility will feature a series of generators currently in use by STELCO, ensuring hands-on, practical training.
  • Qualified Trainers: Courses will be taught by STELCO’s experienced engineers and other professionals trained in the field.
  • Accommodation Facilities: On-site housing will be available for trainees seeking extended training periods.

STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy stated that the decision to establish the centre in Thulusdhoo was made in collaboration with the island council. “Our main goal is to train young people in mechanical engineering and upskill current employees to obtain certification in their respective fields,” Fahmy said.

Collaborations and Certifications

STELCO plans to collaborate with the Maldives National University (MNU) to integrate its courses into the university’s curriculum. Certificates issued will align with Maldives Qualifications Authority (MQA) standards, ensuring broader recognition.

Fahmy emphasized the company’s commitment to excellence by mandating a certain level of training for engineers before they begin work at STELCO. “We have the equipment and educated engineers capable of providing this opportunity. This initiative will make training more accessible to those passionate about the field,” he said.

Training Capacity and Goals

STELCO aims to train approximately 300 individuals annually at the centre, significantly contributing to the nation’s engineering workforce. In addition, the centre will support STELCO’s operational needs in remote areas, enabling quicker response times for power outages and equipment repairs without relying on Male’-based staff.

This landmark initiative underscores STELCO’s dedication to enhancing local expertise and fostering self-reliance in critical infrastructure development.
