Male’ City, Maldives – The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China’s TBEA Group to connect Male’, Villimale’, and Gulhifalhu with a high-capacity electricity transmission network.
The agreement outlines the development of infrastructure to meet the growing electricity demand in the region. A key component of the project is the construction of a 150 MW dual-fuel power plant on Thilafushi Island. This plant will utilize both oil and gas to ensure a stable and efficient power supply for the interconnected grid.
STELCO stated that initial studies for the project will commence shortly, with construction set to begin next year. The electricity grid connection will be implemented once the Thila-Male’ Bridge, currently under development, is completed.
This initiative mirrors the successful integration of Male’, Hulhule’, and Hulhumale’ electricity grids via the Sinamale’ Bridge, providing a roadmap for enhancing the reliability and sustainability of energy supply in the Greater Male’ region.
The collaboration with TBEA Group is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting the Maldives’ economic growth by ensuring a robust energy infrastructure to meet increasing demands.
